With the Flemish Masters in situ project, art magazine Openbaar Kunstbezit Vlaanderen aims to make works by Flemish masters that can still be found in their original location more accessible. There are quite a lot of these around, including the four paintings depicting the four evangelists by Flemish baroque painter Theodoor van Loon which adorn the sanctuary of the Church of Saint Catherine in the beguinage of Diest.
When they were commissioned, the four evangelists were a popular topic, as they were the men who wrote about Jesus’s life in the New Testament. At the moment, Diest council is having the four paintings restored, but two of them will already be there to admire in the beguinage church from 1 June 2019. The remaining two will join their counterparts later in the year.
