Ghent painter and director of the city’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts Theodoor Canneel designed neo-Byzantine murals for the choir walls. A triumphant Christ as saviour of the world, surrounded and worshipped by the entire congregation, is the main theme. The colourful and atmospheric work with numerous graphically well-developed figures was restored to its full glory in 2017.
The Heilige Kerstkerk or Skippers’ church dedicated to Saint Saviour is the local skipper families’ port of call for christenings, marriages and funerals, or just for the weekly service. The fragment of a ship on the square in front of the church is not a coincidence, therefore.
