Route Aalst-Dendermonde

Rubens and Van Dyck by the river Schelde
Vlaamse Meesters in Situ Aalst/Dendermonde

In the province Oost-Vlaanderen, a beautiful, green area called ‘Scheldeland’ is situated. It is the ideal environment for a cycling tour, or a boat tour. Travel on the water, or cycle by the shores of the river Dender to discover the lovely, surrounding landscapes and the neighbouring cities. Start in Aalst and arrive in Dendermonde, where the Dender blends together with the river Schelde. Or make the same trip the other way around!

While you are in these cities, take your time to enjoy two magnificent works of Flemish Masters in Situ. In the Church of Saint Martin in Aalst, Peter Paul Rubens painted Saint Roch appointed by Christ as Patron of Plague Sufferers. In Dendermonde, Antoon Van Dyck’s Adoration of the Shephers is hanging. Two charming masterpieces!
