In this lecture entitled A sordid, piddling little infirmary. On the ambiguous role of women’s convents in the Middle Ages, professor Steven Vanderputten examines how we can look behind the negative image. Taking archaeological, material and written sources, he comes to the conclusion that women in religious communities like these might have overstepped the tacit boundaries set for them, but that they definitely did so with conviction and had a much greater impact on society than we could ever have imagined until now.
